The Texas Medical Association says that erectile dysfunction drugs are not safe to buy online.
Texas drug regulators say the drug's active ingredient, sildenafil, may cause dangerous side effects if you take it with certain other drugs. But in a recent advisory committee meeting, Dr. David Siegel, a professor of medical anthropology and medical anthropology at Texas A& M University in San Antonio, said he does not think it's safe to buy generic Viagra online.
The drug, called sildenafil citrate, is used to treat male erectile dysfunction, or ED. But erectile dysfunction drugs can cause side effects such as headache, flushing, and upset stomach.
The association, called the "TEXPAY committee," said it was concerned that generic drugs are not safe to buy on the Internet. A doctor may write a prescription for the drug without seeing a doctor's prescription.
But the committee does not recommend that people who take nitrate-based drugs like nitroglycerin or isosorbide, a drug used to treat heart failure, take them for ED.
"This is a very serious condition, a very serious condition, and the only way to get it is through a doctor's prescription," said Dr. Robert M. Fugh, an endocrinologist and professor of medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Dallas, who asked not to be identified.
The committee said that while Viagra is not approved by the FDA to treat ED, it's safe to buy generic Viagra online. The FDA has not approved the generic version.
The FDA has also not approved generic sildenafil, which is used to treat ED. But the FDA has not approved a similar drug, Viagra, for treating ED.
In the advisory committee meeting, Dr. M. Casey Tatum, a professor of medicine and assistant director of the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations, said that she did not think that a generic Viagra online would be safe for anyone to buy.
"In fact, Viagra (sildenafil) is a very effective drug for treating erectile dysfunction, and is not approved by the FDA for this use," Tatum said in the meeting.
Tatum said that while the FDA's approval of the drug for ED can be seen as a victory for generic drugs, it does not mean that the FDA will approve any drug that's approved for treating ED.
Tatum said that his concern was not a concern of the committee members, and that he was concerned about the FDA's approval of Viagra for ED. "When a doctor writes a prescription for Viagra without an approved prescription, that means that it is dangerous for anyone to use it," Tatum said.
Tatum said that his concern was that generic sildenafil is not as safe as the original version, but he said that he was worried about the safety of generic sildenafil. "I think that we have seen some of the problems, as we've gotten older and more and more people are using it, as a medication for ED, and that's why we're worried."
Tatum said that he is not averse of any drug that is approved by the FDA. The FDA will review the drug's safety and other important factors to determine if it is safe.
The drug's maker, Pfizer, is not required to list the use of the drug in its "Drug Information Leaflet," and the company did not respond to a request for comment on the advisory committee meeting.
